Anemone, or Wind Flower, usually means
"Anticipation" but could also mean "Forsaken." This
delicate flower is a perfect gift to soothe the nerves of
someone you care about.
The two conflicting meanings of Anemone probably
stem from the famous Greek love story between
Adonis and Aphrodite. When Adonis lived with
Aphrodite, the two lovers would go hunting together.
Aphrodite's ex-lover, the god of war Ares, was jealous.
When Adonis was alone, Ares disguised himself as a
boar and gored Adonis to death.
In despair, Aphrodite sprinkled nectar on Adonis’
wounds. As Aphrodite carried her lover's body out of
the woods, Anemones sprung up where each drop of
blood and nectar fell onto the earth.
The wind which blows the blossoms open, will also
blow the petals away; thus it is called the Anemone, or
Wind Flower, for that which brings forth its life, as well
as ends it... Anticipation and forsaken may be just the
two sides of the same coin.
