Where are we getting flowers?
Dutch auction: Holland is without a doubt the leader of
the global floral trade. We are one of the very few retail
florists who obtain the majority of flowers from the
Aalsmeer auction in Holland. We receive the shipment
twice a week. They have such high-quality, unusual
flowers that people in the US have never seen.
West coast (California, Oregon): Many "Wild" flowers
(Stock, Snapdragon, Sunflowers, Delphinium, etc) come
from the West Coast. Though slightly more expensive
than South American growers, domestic flowers have an
advantage that their flowers can be shipped via a
refrigerated truck rather than a cargo plane.
Local growers: Some Sunflowers, Lilac, Dogwood,
Cherry, Tulips are from local growers in New Jersey and
upstate New York. They are small mom&pop growers, but
have good stuff.
South America (Columbia and Ecuador): Most of our
roses come from a single, Veriflora-certified farm in
Columbia. In fact more than 95% of roses sold in the US
come from South American growers who enjoy ideal
growing conditions for many flowers.
Other countries: Gladiola (Brazil), Orchid (Thailand),
some Tulips and Gerbers (Canada); some flowers from
Holland are grown in Kenya.
Staging area in the Aalsmeer auction
in Holland, the world largest flower
auction market. Note that the entire
room is refrigerated. We buy most of
our flowers over there through a
broker.
