Bethpage is a hamlet and a census-designated place in Nassau County,
New York, USA. The population was 16,543 at the 2000 census.
Bethpage is within the Town of Oyster Bay with its own school district.
Early names for the area include Bedelltown, Jerusalem, and Jerusalem
Station. From about 1867 until 1936 it was known as Central Park. For
many years Bethpage was home to the Grumman Aircraft Engineering
Corporation, which made, among other things, the F-14 Tomcat and the
Apollo Lunar Module for moon landings. (Bethpage is thus mentioned in
the film Apollo 13.)
* Grumman was bought out by Northrop and is now part of Northrop
Grumman Corp. Sadly, they moved out of Long Island...

Around the time of the Civil War, this area was called "Central Park." But
by the 1930s, residents had grown tired of having their community
confused with the park in Manhattan. It was not unusual for mail intended
for Long Island's Central Park to be misdirected to Manhattan. In 1931,
the State Park Commission purchased the Benjamin Yoakum estate and
nearby farms, and gave the new state park the historic name of Bethpage.
Residents petitioned the postal service to change the name of Central
Park to Bethpage in 1936.
