Central Islip (known colloquially as C.I.) is a
census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, New
York, USA, and a hamlet of the Town of Islip. The population
was 31,950 at the 2000 census.

In the summer of 1841, Edgar Fenn Peck, a wealthy New
York doctor who had just moved to Smithtown, began the
first serious exploration of the virtual wilderness of what is
now Central Islip. He was convinced the pine barrens was
an area suitable for development, though many disagreed.
